I was already sure I’d enjoy the book I chose, since the author has never disappointed me when it comes to his books, so I wasn’t all that surprised when I ended up being correct in my assumption. If I had to pick, my favorite things about The Son of Neptune would be the perfectly timed jokes and the amazingly developed characters. An example of both of these is the character Percy, one of the three main characters. The chapters in his perspective are usually the most interesting and have all the best jokes. There’s one in the first chapter where he gets cornered by two gorgons that says, “(…) if he ever needed a suit of armor, he was going to make it out of Crispy Cheese ’n’ Wieners.” in reference to a tray one of the gorgons was holding that held food which somehow remained intact despite the beating the tray had taken. There isn’t much that I don’t like about the book, and the only thing I can think of at the moment is that the book doesn’t spend much time describing the main characters. Initially, there’s just no description at all. It’s almost always up to the reader to decide what they think the main characters look like up until a few chapters into the book, but even that isn’t something I can say I dislike. It’s just slightly annoying at the worst.
